'Heroes' by Anne Perry

November 29, 2016

A short story or novelette ... take your pick.

My guess in the latter and I really quite enjoyed it. I picked it up in the local library because it is short and it only took an afternoon to read.

Set in the WWI trenches it explores the strange duality of murder and honor set amidst the brutal reality of constant death and the invisible worth of a name. To be honest it was quite obvious from the off what was going to happen; so in terms of catchy punch and unexpected twist at the end, that doesn't happen.

What does happen is a proper yarn in the old tradition of a 'Boy's Own' war tale. It is simply written and simply put, and all the better for it.

Definitely worth a read - even if as a 'break' between books.
